2018 FIFA World Cup flashback: When Mbappe’s brace inspired France’s 4-3 win over Argentina | Football News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The FIFA World Cup – the biggest sporting spectacle on the planet – has reached its business end with France and Argentina going up against each other in the final scheduled to be held on Sunday.
Lionel Messi inspired Argentina’s 3-0 victory over 2018 runners-up Croatia in the first semi-final while France ended Morocco’s fairy-tale run in the World Cup with 2-0 win in the other semi-final.

The summit clash between the defending champions France and Argentina will be a replay of the last edition Round of 16 match where Kylian Mbappe fashioned the Les Blues’ come from behind 4-3 win.
Both Argentina and France have pitted against each other on three occasions at the World Cups in 1930, 1978 and 2018. The first two meetings, in 1930 and 1978, came at the group stages, with Argentina coming out on top, but France’s win in Russia was their first knockout stage clash.
Let’s relive the 2018 World Cup clash between both the sides:
* Kylian Mbappe won a 13th-minute penalty with a storming 75-yard run as Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring for France by converting a successful penalty.
* Argentina drew level in the 41st minute courtesy Angel Di Maria’s left-footed strike past Hugo Lloris and into the top corner.
* Three minutes into the second half, a fortuitous flick from Gabriel Mercado put Argentina ahead 2-1.
* Benjamin Pavard restored the parity for France with a wonderful angled half-volley from the edge of the box after 57 minutes.
* Seven minutes later Kylian Mbappe got France back into the lead with a brilliant move. Mbappe capitalised on Paul Pogba’s blocked shot in the box to score a wonderful goal.
* Mbappe turned the game in France’s favour with another strike in the 68th minute, latching on to Giroud’s beautiful touch and finishing in style.
* France survived a scare in the dying moments of the match when substitute Sergio Aguero reduced the margin with an injury time header.
