The San Francisco 49ers entered the NFL offseason with one of the most fascinating quarterback situations.
A resolution to end Jimmy Garoppolo’s time in the Bay Area was projected to happen before the 2022 NFL draft.
Garoppolo was not dealt at any point of the offseason to date, and the trade partners have dried up for the 49ers.
San Francisco made a commitment to move forward with Trey Lance, but it has to try its best to get something in return for Garoppolo.
A handful of franchises have question marks at the position, but they are not empty when it comes to depth.
The Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers may have been intriguing fits for the 49ers in February and March, but those destinations seem unlikely now with rookies and veterans in place.
The Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks appear to be the most open jobs at the moment. San Francisco could also try to trade Garoppolo to a potential contender looking for a backup in case an injury occurs.

Potential Trade: San Francisco receives 2023 third- and sixth-round picks.
Houston is one of the few teams that Jimmy Garoppolo could walk in and start right away.
Davis Mills is on track to be the starter after Deshaun Watson was shipped to the Cleveland Browns.
Kyle Allen and Jeff Driskel are the backups behind Mills on the quarterback depth chart. Neither player was particularly impressive in their spot-starting gigs in the NFL.
Houston is an ideal trade partner for the 49ers because it resides in the AFC and owns an abundance of draft picks from trades over the last few years.
The 49ers should not demand a massive haul in return for Garoppolo. Two picks in the 2023 NFL draft should suffice in their current situation.
Houston is in possession of an extra third-round pick from the Watson deal with the Browns, and it has additional sixth-round selections from trades with the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants.
The Texans will not be willing to give up a ton of picks because they need to focus on building for the future, but a third and a sixth seems reasonable given what they have available.

Potential Trade: San Francisco receives two 2023 fifth-round picks.
The 49ers may have a more difficult time moving Garoppolo within the NFC West to the Seattle Seahawks.
San Francisco’s front office probably does not want to hand Garoppolo extra motivation to beat the franchise on two occasions every season.
A Garoppolo deal to Seattle may not come with a lot of value in return because the Seahawks probably do not want to fund the 49ers’ future in any capacity.
However, Seattle is in need of a starting-caliber quarterback with Geno Smith and Drew Lock on the roster after the Russell Wilson trade to the Denver Broncos.
Seattle opted to focus on defensive improvements over a quarterback upgrade in the 2022 NFL draft, which leads you to believe that it either has confidence in Smith or Lock, or the team thought it could find a replacement on the post-draft trade market.
Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield are the only real improvements on the trade market at the moment.
Garoppolo may be the cheaper option since the Browns just mortgaged some high-profile draft picks to acquire Deshaun Watson from Houston.
Seattle has an extra fifth-round selection in the 2023 NFL draft from a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Seahawks could use that pick and its own fifth-round selection to acquire Garoppolo if the 49ers are willing to make the deal within the division.

Potential Trade: San Francisco acquires two 2023 sixth-round picks.
The Detroit Lions have Jared Goff in place as their starting quarterback for now.
The former Los Angeles Rams signal-caller had a below-average first season in Detroit that was caused by average play in the pocket and a lack of playmakers around him.
Goff only threw 19 touchdown passes in 14 games, but he was only picked off on eight occasions.
Detroit added more weapons for Goff to work with in the form of D.J. Chark and Jameson Williams, so the pressure is on the former first-round pick to succeed this season.
The Lions do not have a backup plan in place if Goff fails to live up to expectations or gets injured.
Tim Boyle and David Blough have not been great in spot-start roles, and if the Lions have to go them at any point, they might as well add losses to their record.
The only issue from Detroit’s perspective is Goff’s large contract that came with him from the Rams. The Lions may not be willing to add Garoppolo to the same roster in order to keep Goff’s confidence up.
If the Lions were persuaded to take on Garoppolo as a one-year backup, they could make it work by sending a pair of sixth-round selections to San Francisco.
The Lions are in possession of an extra sixth-round pick from a trade with the Denver Broncos, so a deal could be worked out for a pair of Day 3 picks.
