5 NFL stars who should look to move on from their current teams
The 2022 NFL offseason is well underway and several stars, such as Russell Wilson, have already switched teams. With the free agency period set to begin in a few days and the trade market having been active, many more players are expected to leave their current teams over the next several weeks.
Here are five players currently under contract who should try to get to a new team for the 2022 NFL season.
NFL stars who should be looking to leave their current teams in the 2022 offseason
#5 – Brandin Cooks, WR, Houston Texans
Brandin Cooks is entering the final year of his contract with the Houston Texans in 2022. This makes him a potential trade candidate, but even more so because the Houston Texans are in the middle of fully rebuilding their entire roster.
It’s unlikely that the veteran wide receiver will remain with the team beyond the 2022 season, so it makes the most sense to trade him now and get something in return rather than let him walk for free at the end of the year. Cook would probably prefer to play for a contending team this year, so tarding him makes sense for both sides as a mutually beneficial option.
#4 – Jarvis Landry, WR, Cleveland Browns
Jarvis Landry has reportedly been unhappy with his situation with the Cleveland Browns this past year. There are rumors that he would like to be traded to a new team during the 2022 NFL offseason. Like Cooks, Landry is also entering the final year of his contract, which makes him a potential trade candidate. The Browns recently acquired Amari Cooper via trade with the Dallas Cowboys, so they may grant Landry his wish of joining a new team.

Here are three more players who are under contract but should be looking to join a new team in the 2022 offseason.
#3 – Saquon Barkley, RB, New York Giants
It’s been a frustrating run for Saquon Barkley over the last three years as injuries and terrible play from the New York Giants offensive line has stifled his progress. He’s one of the most talented running backs in the entire NFL, but his production has not matched his potential recently.
The Giants have not yet given him a contract extension, so now may be the best time for Saquon Barkley to find a new team. A fresh start with a new team could help rejuvenate his career.
#2 – Jimmy Garoppolo, QB, San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers tarded all the way up to the third pick of the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance as Jimmy Garoppolo’s eventual replacement as the starting quarterback. It’s very possible that they will officially make the change in the 2022 season.
If Garoppolo wants to continue to be the starting quarterback for any NFL team moving forward, it will likely need to be for a team other than the 49ers.
#1 – Deshaun Watson, QB, Houston Texans
Deshaun Watson demanded a trade from the Houston Texans prior to the 2021 NFL season. He ended up sitting out the entire season because of his refusal to play for the Texans, as well as dealing with a legal situation off the field.
Now that the court case has some clarity and he’s not currently facing criminal charges, his trade market is expected to heat up quickly. He is just 26 years old and in the prime of his career with the potential to help the right team to a Super Bowl.
