700 apps on the Apple App Store could be pricier than you remember | Digit
Apple recently announced a few changes to its pricing structure for the App store, bringing more flexibility to developers to set prices for their own products. These changes will be applicable across 175 storefronts and 45 currencies. The change was announced along with 700 new price points and helpful tools that developers can use to set prices in different countries. The changes will be applicable for auto-renewable subscriptions, recurring payments, and new in-app purchases made in early 2023.
While making the announcement, the tech giant said that these new pricing policies are “the most comprehensive upgrade” ever since the App Store first came into existence in 2008. Apple has claimed that the new pricing structure will end up increasing the existing number of price points by 10 x. They said that now there are 600 new price points and an additional 100 higher price points that are available to developers upon request.
With this, the total number of price points that are a part of the App Store goes up to 900, starting at just $0.29 (roughly Rs 20) and going up to $10,000 (roughly Rs 8,25,000) on request. Most of these price points will see an incremental increase. When applied to products that are priced from $0.29 to $9.99 (roughly Rs 820), there will be price points available at every $0.10 (approximately Rs 8). The price points will increase as the price of the product increases.
Other changes to pricing
Apple is not being a stickler about prices ending at $.99 anymore – now you’ll find rounded prices too. Developers can choose local storefronts to navigate taxes and currency in other countries. Prices for the apps will be generated for different storefronts by the App Store software, however, developers can choose to set the prices manually. The changes in pricing will start with subscription apps and will be applied to other apps in 2023.
What could this mean for Indian developers?
Indian developers can set their own prices while taking into account Apple’s high tax rates, the taxes in India itself, and even currency conversions. They will enjoy greater flexibility in determining the price points at which they can make their apps available and can set the same based on the consumption patterns of their target audience.
