Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy: Shaw, Rahane, Kotian star in Mumbai’s huge win over Baroda | Cricket News – Times of India

MUMBAI: Powered by birthday boy Prithvi Shaw 83 (63b, 4×6, 6×4), skipper Ajinkya Rahane (71, 45b, 2×6, 8×4), who smashed his fourth fifty in five games, and off-spinner Tanush Kotian (4-16 in four overs), Mumbai score a crushing 82-run win over Baroda on Tuesday morning to give themselves a great chance to qualify for the knockouts of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Guwahati.
Going into their fifth and last league game of the tournament in Elite Group B, Mumbai needed to beat Baroda by a big margin to make it to the quarterfinals, and they did the needful in style. They would now hope that Karnataka, who’ve won four out of four games so far, beat Bengal on Tuesday.
After Mumbai were put in by Baroda, star opener Shaw celebrated his 22nd birthday in style, shrugging off poor form while adding 151 in merely 100 balls for the first wicket with Rahane, who’s been in brilliant touch through the league phase. With 286 runs in five [email protected] and a strike rate of 133.64, Rahane, who’s sequence of scores here reads 71, 75, 54, 17 and 69, is currently the top run-getter in the league phase of the tournament.
India’s Test vice-captain will now feel far more confident going into the home Test series against New Zealand. After he had endured a miserable time in the Test series in England, where he managed merely 109 runs in four [email protected], the 33-year-old’s spot in India’s Test team looked to be in danger. Many found it surprising that he was made the Mumbai captain ahead of Shaw – who had led Mumbai to the Vijay Hazare title earlier this year – for this T20 event. However, Rahane’s consistent show at Guwahati has vindicated the faith of Mumbai’s selectors in him.
“He’s spoken with his bat and proved everybody wrong. He’s a fabulous batter. He’s batted like a king in the league phase. Unfortunately, he’s been tagged as someone who’s not a T20 batter. He’s the one who’s got most of the runs for us. See his strike rate. That tag should be removed against his name,” Mumbai chief selector Salil Ankola told TOI.
“Ajinkya playing these matches is a good learning experience for the youngsters in the team too. For someone who’s played 78 Tests and is India’s Test vice-captain, he plays domestic cricket with the same level of commitment, dedication and intensity. Our youngsters must learn from that,” praised Ankola.
In a bold decision, Mumbai dropped former captain and experienced wicketkeeper Aditya Tare, replacing him with Hardik Tamore. Their innovative tactic of opening the bowling with part-time off-spinner Siddhesh Lad continued to pay dividends, as he gave away just 12 runs in three overs and took the first wicket, that of the experienced Kedar Devdhar (5).
Brief Scores: Mumbai 193-2 in 20 overs (Prithvi Shaw 83, Ajinkya Rahane 71) beat Baroda 111-9 in 20 overs (Tanush Kotian 4-16) by 82 runs
