Liverpool’s dream and nightmare Champions League draw scenarios

Liverpool cruised through to the Champions League knockout stages after winning all six of their group matches. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been in imperious form in Europe this season as they look to get their hands on the trophy for the second time in four years.

The Reds qualified for the last 16 as group winners with two matches to spare but still racked-up impressive victories over Porto and AC Milan in their final two games.

Klopp rotated his team for those encounters but Liverpool still had too much for their inferior opponents.

Attentions have now turned to the draw for the knockout stages of the competition, which is due to take place at 11am GMT at the UEFA headquarters in Switzerland on Monday.

Liverpool have been seeded for the draw, which means they will face one of the group runners-up in the last 16.

The Reds can’t face Chelsea as the rules of the competition prevent clubs from the same country meeting until the quarter-finals.

Villarreal are currently edging towards the relegation zone in La Liga and they’re hardly having a season to remember.

The two clubs last met in the 2015/16 campaign as they went head-to-head in the semi-final of the Europa League. Liverpool won over two legs but went on to lose to Sevilla in the final.

Sporting Lisbon could also provide Liverpool with a straightforward route to the quarter-finals.

The Portuguese side finished behind Ajax in Group C after winning three of their games but have hardly set the competition on fire.

And Klopp will fancy his side’s chances of defeating the Primeira Liga champions over two legs.

Nightmare: Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain are the team that all the group winners will be hoping to avoid in the last 16.

The French side are littered with some of the world’s most talented players and are among the favourites to lift the trophy.

PSG struggled to asset their dominance on Group A of the competition as they eventually finished second to Manchester City.

But with the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in their side, the Parisians are more than capable of defeating any rival team over two legs.

If PSG are drawn out of the hat against Liverpool, it will be a nightmare scenario for the Reds. But it would set-up a mouthwatering encounter, which Champions League fans would be glued to.
