Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has three key signings to make after Brentford draw

Tottenham’s bleak draw with Brentford offered a sobering reminder to that there is plenty of work to be done for Champions League qualification just yet. With bitter rivals Arsenal having beaten Manchester United 3-1 on Saturday lunchtime, Antonio Conte’s men knew that anything but a win would not be good enough to take them back into the top four. That is exactly what happened, with Conte’s team struggling for creativity. The Italian will look at his side and know exactly where to improve over the summer. Express Sport takes a look at three positions that need upgrading on in north London.

Right-wing-back

Emerson Royal’s poor form since he joined the club on deadline day in the summer has been a real area of concern for Conte.

The Brazilian has been erratic and was back to his usual ways in the draw in west London, and with Matt Doherty out until the end of the season, someone new and more consistent may be preferred.

Denzel Dumfries, Tariq Lamptey and Adama Traore have all been linked, but whether deals to bring one of them to the club can be done is yet to be seen.

One thing is for certain – if they cannot match the talents of Kyle Walker, Reece James or Trent Alexander-Arnold, there is no way that they will progress to really challenge those at the top of the table.

Left-wing-back

The wide berths are a key area of concern for Conte. Spurs are not leaking goals too much and defending is generally seen to be a strong point at Tottenham but offensively they are lacking.

Sergio Reguilon is in a similar predicament to Emerson, he hasn’t strongly impressed Conte and an improvement could be sought after if they want to challenge for trophies.

Marc Cucurella has been linked with a move from Brighton & Hove Albion in the past, and that could be revisited if the decision is made to bid for the Spaniard.

However, other options such as Renan Lodi or Dwight McNeil could also be considered for an attacking yet defensively sturdy option to compete.

Creative midfielder

Tottenham have failed to properly replace Christian Eriksen since his move to Inter Milan in 2020.

The Dane was linked with Tottenham following his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, but ultimately Brentford were the ones to secure his service – and he has seriously impressed in west London, and a move could well be on the cards if a deal can be reached over the summer.

Two other names that are also available on free transfers are Jesse Lingard and Paulo Dybala, both of whom can play behind the striker and out wide.

Free transfers could prove great value for Spurs and allow Conte to spend big elsewhere.
