Man Utd owners the Glazers ‘looking for full sale and not minority’ in new takeover twist

Manchester United owners the Glazers are looking for a full sale of the club instead of just a minority, it has been claimed. The Americans have held all the power at Old Trafford ever since 2005. But as opposition to their regime grows, it seems like they’re now ready to finally walk away after 17 controversial years.

Sir Alex Ferguson often backed the Glazers during his time at Manchester United, previously calling them ‘fantastic’.

But fans have never been aligned with the Americans, regardless of what the Scot said, with many making their feelings known right from the very beginning of their spell in charge.

With the trophies no longer being won at United, and the club failing in the transfer market on a restricted budget year after year, the Glazers are now in the spotlight more than ever before.

On Wednesday, it was widely reported the Glazers were looking to sell a minority stake in the club.

But journalist Tom McDermott, speaking on Twitter, has claimed they’re looking for a ‘full sale’ instead. He said: “Glazer family conducted first round of talks via legal representatives on Tuesday.

“Initial discussion was regarding a full sale and not minority.”

Man Utd transfers: Man Utd have a De Jong swap deal that can change everything

The Glazers have always insisted United isn’t on the market, a stance they’ve not publicly altered in the long 17 years since they touched down.

But there have been murmurings about a potential takeover for a while, now, and it seems like their financial model is no longer as reliable as old.

It comes at a time where United are toiling, both on and off the pitch, as they continue to fall far behind rivals such as Manchester City and Liverpool.

After finishing sixth in the Premier League table last term, the Red Devils were expected to spend big this summer to try and close the gap on the country’s heavyweights.

But United have landed just Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen – despite Erik ten Hag’s determination to bring in more fresh faces.

Man Utd should have sold these five players already

The club wasted three months on Frenkie de Jong, only to discover the Barcelona star remains undeterred in his aim to stay at the Nou Camp.

And it’s believed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire have all begged the club’s hierarchy to add to their squad before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

Since the beginning of the new season, United’s form on the field has worsened as well.

They had been expected to beat Brighton in their opening fixture, especially given how the match was at Old Trafford in front of a packed stadium.

But United ended up losing 2-1, with a brace from Pascal Gross giving the visitors all three points on a difficult afternoon.

And, just on Saturday, the Red Devils slipped to a nightmare 4-0 defeat to Brentford away at the Gtech Community Stadium.

United were outrun, outplayed and outfought during that fixture, with the loss leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.

And they’ll be hoping to bounce back when they lock horns with Liverpool on Monday night, with Jurgen Klopp’s side yet to register a league win of their own.

Meanwhile, at a time where the Glazers appear to be gearing up for a full sale, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s spokesperson has confirmed he’d love to buy the club.

“If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer,” they told The Times.

“If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership.

“This is not about the money that has been spent or not spent. Jim is looking at what can be done now and, knowing how important the club is to the city, it feels like the time is right for a reset.”

And Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol has added: “Sir Jim Ratcliffe was trying to buy Chelsea because he’s a Chelsea season ticket holder, but he’s actually from Greater Manchester and grew up being a Manchester United supporter.

“He’s a self-made billionaire and worth about £12bn. He owns and setup the fourth biggest chemical engineering business in the world.

“He has made no secret of his desire to own a Premier League club. He tried to buy Chelsea, coming in with a late bid. He said he had the money to be able to do the deal quickly.

“A lot of people saw that as a dry run for trying to buy Manchester United.

“He’s always said he’s potentially interested in buying United if they were put up for sale and that has now been confirmed.”
