Google is having a tough time convincing Apple to adopt RCS for its Messages app. While Apple does not seem interested – and CEO Tim Cook made it quite clear – that is not stopping Google from building more features into its own Messages app. 9to5Google reports that the Messages app on Android soon will transcribe voice memos and have emoji reactions and an improved photo picker.
In the coming version of the Messages app, users will be able to transcribe voice messages. There could be two versions of the feature – one would automatically transcribe the recording while another one requires users’ to tap the ‘Transcribe’ button. The report suggests that the transcription will happen locally on the device.
The in-built Messages app on Android has the option to send or receive voice memos; there is a microphone button allowing users to do so. And you can send voice messages no matter texting through RCS, SMS or MMS.
You can react to a message using the emojis on the Messages app, but you get only seven emojis to react with. However, soon, users would be able to use any emoji to react to a message, similar to how it is on WhatsApp.
There will be a new button, replacing the ‘thumbs down’ emoji, which opens up the ‘Smileys & Emojis’ gallery to select any emoji you want.
Lastly, there is a photo picker with a gallery view. As of now, the photo picker only shows a few of the recent photos, but a new photo picker will replace that, showing users all the photos in a gallery view, so you can scroll down and select even the oldest photo.
These features are expected to be available in the coming version of the Messages app but it is not known when.
