Trevor Noah Is Leaving the Daily Show After 7 Years
The Daily Show host Trevor Noah has announced he’s leaving the show.
Announcing his departure at the end of the show on Thursday night, Noah said that he was “filled with gratitude for the journey” but wants to “carry on exploring” another part of his life.
“It’s been absolutely amazing,” he said. “It’s something that I never expected, and I found myself thinking throughout the time of everything we’ve gone through. The Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the journey… more pandemic and I realized that after the seven years, my time is up.”
Noah took up the post of The Daily Show hose after John Stewart resigned in 2015. At the time, Noah was fairly unknown to American audiences – a standup comedian from South Africa who was perhaps best known for his appearances on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, and various UK comedy panel shows.
“I want to say thank you to you, to you who watched this,” he added. “I never dreamed that I would be here. I sort of feel like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I came here for a tour of what the previous show was and then the next thing you know I was handed the keys.”
Noah also hinted that his exit may be linked to his desire to return to standup:. “I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road, standup was done. And when I got back out there again, I realized there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring,” he said. “I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and putting on shows.”
He also expressed gratitude to viewers, The Daily Show team, and to Comedy Central: “I’ve loved hosting the show, it’s been one of my greatest challenges, it’s been one of my greatest joys,” he said. “I’ve loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh, even when the stories are particularly s***y, on the worst days. We’ve laughed together, we’ve cried together.”
Although Noah has confirmed his exit, he didn’t reveal when his final show would be, saying only that he would be around for a while. “It’s not instant, I’m not disappearing, don’t worry,” he said. “If I owe you money, I’ll still pay you.”
