iPhone 15 Pro Max may come with a 5x periscope camera – Times of India
It has been long rumoured that the iPhone 15 Pro would come with a periscope lens. But, now a report claims that only the iPhone 15 Pro Max would get the new 5x periscope camera, not both of the iPhone 15 Pro models.
The Elec, a South Korean publication, reports that Apple is working on a “folding zoom” periscope camera module, which the company intends to keep exclusive to the bigger of the two iPhone 15 Pro models – the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
The report corroborates the earlier predictions by the analyst Ming Chi-Kuo who had previously suggested that the periscope camera would remain exclusive to the bigger of the two Pro iPhone models this year.
Both iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max may get the periscope zoom camera
It would be the next year, i.e, 2024, when we could see both the Pro iPhone models, presumably the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, to come with the 5x periscope zoom camera. But, this year, only the bigger one would get the new zoom lens.
What is a periscope lens
A Periscope lens is a device consisting of a series of lenses and two 45-degree mirrors that reflect an image from one end of a tube to the other, allowing the viewer to see in a straight line. The periscope zoom setups used in smartphones consist of 90-degree prisms with an array of lenses and sensors placed vertically.

According to the report, the new “zoom actuators” will employ a unique “folded zoom” technique, which bends light inside a prism and sends it to the image sensor, thus preventing the camera module from becoming larger.
The reports note that Jahwa Electronics has developed “ball-guided actuators” that are more suitable for folded zoom modules than the spring actuators currently utilised in iPhone 14 Pro’s telephoto module.
LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics are reportedly roped in to supply the OIS actuators for the periscope lens. Meanwhile, Japan Alps and Mitsumi will reportedly be responsible for the current-telephoto lens actuators for other iPhones with telephoto cameras starting this year.
