IIT Madras-incubated company brings Atmanirbhar “BharOS” for smartphones – Times of India

JandK Operations, a company incubated by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has created a domestically-developed mobile operating system that could be of benefit to India’s 1 billion mobile phone users. The operating software, named ‘BharOS‘, can be installed on commercially available smartphones and provides a secure environment for users, making it a significant contribution towards ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat.’
Currently, BharOS operating system is being offered to organisations with strict privacy and security needs whose employees handle sensitive information that requires secure communication via restricted mobile apps. These users require access to private cloud services via private 5G networks.
India’s homegrown BharOS focuses on privacy and security of users
BharOS comes with No Default Apps and allows access to trusted apps from organisation-specific Private App Store Services (PASS). PASS provides access to a curated list of apps that have been thoroughly vetted and have met certain security and privacy standards of organisations. This ensures that users can have confidence in the apps they are installing as they have been checked for security vulnerabilities and privacy concerns.
The BharOS has been developed by JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops), an organisation incubated by IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation established by IIT Madras and funded by the Department of Science and Technology. The foundation aims to make India competitive with the few countries that currently possess similar capabilities.
Furthermore, BharOS provides “Native Over The Air” (NOTA) updates that aid in maintaining device security. NOTA updates automatically download and install on the device, eliminating the need for manual initiation. This guarantees that the device is consistently running the most recent version of the operating system, including the latest security patches and bug fixes.
Announcing the indigenous mobile operating system BharOS, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “BharOS Service is a Mobile Operating System built on a foundation of trust, with a focus on providing users more freedom, control, and flexibility to choose and use only the apps that fit their needs. This innovative system promises to revolutionise the way users think about security and privacy on their mobile devices.”
