‘One season wonder’: Harry Kane smashes 53-year-old record, joins exclusive club featuring Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney

A day after Premier League leaders Arsenal were humbled by Everton, who find themselves in the relegation zone, their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur brought some relief in the Gunners camp. Spurs produced a clinical show, which was led by their skipper Harry Kane, as they eked a crucial 1-0 win over defending champions Manchester City, an outcome that saw them move just one-point behind Newcastle United in the top four race.

Kane broke the deadlock in the 15th minute as Pierre-Emile Hjbjerg intercepted a pass from City midfielder Rodri just outside the D, before setting it up for Kane, who scored his 200th Premier League goal.

This was Kane’s 267th strike for Spurs in all competitions and it helped him overtake Tottenham legend Jimmy Greaves, who stood as club’s leading scorer for 53 long years.

The goal also saw Kane join an exclusive list of strikers in Premier League as he became only the third player to score 200 or more goals in the top-tier English league. Only Wayne Rooney and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer have scored more goals than Kane in Premier League. While Rooney have 208 strikes under his name, Shearer has netted 260 times in the competition.

Shearer had an epic reaction to Kane’s magnificent feat as he congratulated the England forward on social media. “Congratulations @HKane passing the great Jimmy Greaves record at @SpursOfficial. Also @WayneRooney and I were wondering where you’ve been! Well done on joining the 200 @premierleague club,” tweeted the former Newcastle player.

Kane also had a cheeky reaction to his latest feat. Sharing a picture of the scoreboard, which highlighted Kane’s 267th strike, the striker tweeted: “One season wonder.”

Kane said that breaking Jimmy Greaves’ record to become Tottenham’s all-time leading scorer was a “magical moment”.

“It’s hard to put into words, just a magical moment and I’m so glad it came in a win. We worked so hard to keep a clean sheet. It was so special to do it in front of the fans. There has been so much talk about it in the last couple of weeks and to do it in such a big game is even more special. It is a great feeling. When I started playing regularly it wasn’t even in my imagination to score 200 Premier League goals and i have a few more years left so hopefully there are more to come,” Kane told Sky Sports after the match.

“[Greaves] is a complete hero, one of the best strikers to play the game so to be in that conversation is special. And to overtake him is a huge moment for me,” he added.
