iPhone SE 4 will be a toned-down iPhone 14, series not cancelled: Report

Next-gen iPhone SE

The news comes courtesy of a claim made by noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that Apple has not killed its iPhone SE yet. The source also claims that the upcoming iPhone SE will be built on the iPhone 14’s chassis, thereby meaning that the device will feature a 6.1-inch OLED display. The panel for the upcoming iPhone SE might be manufactured by BOE.

Furthermore, the upcoming iPhone SE will be the first iPhone to feature Apple’s custom made 5G baseband chip, which is said to be made on a 4nm process. The new chip is likely to support only Sub6 5G, and not mmWave. By the looks of it, the iPhone SE could serve as testing grounds for Apple for the new chip. The company might be trying to test the chip out for issues with a relatively cheaper model than to use it directly in its flagship lineup.

It remains to be seen as to when Apple starts incorporating the 5G baseband chip to its mainstream models, as the shortcomings (compatibility issues with mmWave and satellite communication) are yet to be addressed.

As for the upcoming iPhone SE, production of the device is said to start in the first half of 2024, so there is still plenty of time left for Apple to turn things around. Also, it is worth noting that there is still around a year left for the device to launch, so a lot can change by the time the device hits the commercial shelves.
