Asian Hockey Championship: International hockey set to return to Chennai after 16 years | Hockey News – Times of India
CHENNAI: International hockey will return to the city after a gap of 16 years with the Men’s Asian Championship to be held here at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium in the last week of August this year.
The men’s Asia Cup hockey championship in 2007 was the last international hockey event that happened in Chennai.
“The dates for the event have not been finalised yet but it’ll tentatively be held in the last week of August. Representatives from Hockey India have inspected the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium and suggested a few things to change. We will make all the necessary changes (such as re-laying the astro-turf) and get the stadium ready on time,” Tamil Nadu minister for youth welfare and sports development Udhayanidhi Stalin told the media during an interaction on Wednesday.
Apart from Udhayanidhi, Tamil Nadu’s sports secretary Atulya Misra and member secretary of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, J Meghanatha Reddy, were also present in the meeting.
The newly appointed minister has been quite active and has taken a few quick decisions to fast-track overall sports development in the state and make Tamil Nadu a model for sports in the country.
The state government is keen on developing the grassroots-level infrastructure, scout talent across the state and train them for the future, and also setting up three state-of-the-art Centres for Sports Science in Tamil Nadu.
“We’ll build three centres for Sports in Madurai, Nilgiris and Chennai. We have also signed an MoU with Sri Ramachandra Centre of Sports Science to help the current players use the facilities,” Udhayanidhi explained.
Moreover, Udhayanidhi has requested the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister of youth affairs and sports Anurag Thakur to allot Khelo India to Tamil Nadu next year.
“We want to host Khelo India next year and have already conveyed our interest to the central government and are waiting for their confirmation,” Udhayanidhi added.
The minister revealed that the state government will spend Rs 25 crore to renovate five stadiums — Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium and Velachery Aquatic Complex soon.
Tamil Nadu Champions Foundation, a public-private initiative to support young sports aspirants, has roped in former India skipper and Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni as its brand ambassador.
“On the final leg of the Chief Minister’s Trophy, we are planning to release the anthem and mascot of TN Champions Foundation,” Udhayanidhi revealed.
