Tottenham admit Richarlison concerns as Brazilian urged to ‘stay calm’

Cristian Stellini has expressed concerns that Richarlison may feel unhappy at his treatment by Tottenham. It has been a difficult time in London for the Brazil World Cup star since his £60m transfer from Everton in the summer.

Even now he is still recovering from a persistent injury which is keeping him out of the first team under Cristian Stellini. And his spell playing for Antonio Conte ended under something of a cloud after he accused his team-mates of being selfish after the 3-3 draw with Southampton.

He was then pilloried in return by Conte for his goalscoring record. That remains at 19 Premier League games without a single goal – plenty for Richarlison to reflect on at the end of his first season at Tottenham.

“I hope that Richy understands that we are taking care of him,” Stellini said. “We have to take care with him, to give him training, and the right timing to play. To not take risks.

“These are things that can happen in a season when you have many injuries, when you have a lot of problems, when you are not consistent in your training, you are not consistent in your performance. It could be normal that a striker has a season like this.

“But now when you live through an experience like Richarlison this season, maybe they can grow in their mindset.” Stellini has spoken to the Brazil No 9 about rediscovering his international touch in the Premier League but ultimately the Tottenham head coach can offer little but tough love.

“We spoke,” Stellini said. “We speak now a lot about confidence and the way he needs to stay calm to not force himself too much. It’s important for Richy to stay with the team to work. It’s one week he worked with us. It’s important that he feels involved in the next game.

“But it’s important to be consistent, to be involved for eight games and for seven weeks. Confidence in moments like Richarlison is in comes from the work, from training, from his job.”
