Ten Hag spots worrying ‘problem’ as Man Utd flops fail to take chance
United never looked as if they would get back into the game and Sevilla rounded off the win late on as En-Nesyri grabbed his second. De Gea, well outside his 18-yard box, attempted to control a high ball but could only deflect it into the Sevilla star’s path and he finished cooly.
Ten Hag’s side were without several first-team players, which handed opportunities to the likes of Maguire and Victor Lindelof. But the United boss did not want to use that as an excuse and says he still trusts the players who stepped in for the absentees.
He added: “It’s not about them [the players who are missing]. It’s about the players who are on the pitch. They have to perform. I believe in them, trust them and they have to show. Today we were not good enough.
“Yes [I trust the players], because we showed so many occasions good performances and good wins. But tonight and some occasions more, we were not ready for the game and it can’t be.
“At this level playing for Manchester United, you have to be ready for every game, especially because this was a great opportunity, a great occasion, a quarter-final in Europe and to win something and then you gave it away. So we have to blame ourselves.”
