Eddie Howe shoved by furious fan during Newcastle vs Leeds in wild scenes
A supporter at Elland Road managed to get themselves into the Newcastle touchline area and appeared to shove Eddie Howe before being taken away by stewards in the Magpies’ 2-2 draw with Leeds on Saturday. As the match edged towards a thrilling climax, attention was drawn away from the action as a supporter was able to breach security and join Howe and Jason Tindall near the touchline.
Howe looked shocked as he was watching on, waiting for his side to take a free-kick on the edge of the Leeds penalty area, before he was interrupted by a pitch invader that became physical with the Newcastle boss before being restrained by security.
The incident came moments before the full-time whistle to end a thrilling match with huge impacts at both ends of the Premier League table, with several penalty incidents, key goals and a red card for Junior Firpo minutes before Howe was rushed by a supporter.
Elland Road erupted just moments into the game when club captain Luke Ayling tapped home a rebound to give Sam Allardyce’s outfit a much-needed lead, then they had the opportunity to extend their advantage from the penalty spot – but Patrick Bamford’s effort was saved by Nick Pope.
Moments later the visitors had their own spot-kick and the opportunity to equalise when Alexander Isak was brought down by Maximilian Wober, before Callum Wilson duly beat Joel Robles from 12 yards.
The visitors had a second penalty awarded when Firpo handled the ball in the area, as Wilson beat Robles for a second time despite the Spaniard’s antics. However, Rasmus Kristensen’s deflected strike ensured both teams came away with a point in a crucial game at both ends of the table.
