IPL 2023: Can Lucknow Super Giants qualify for the playoffs?
Lucknow Super Giants had a dream debut season last year when the Uttar Pradesh franchise won 9 of their 14 matches to finish third on the points table. Though LSG were later knocked out by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the eliminator, the Gautam Gambhir-led side will be looking to make it back to the play-off stage this year.
Much like in 2022, LSG remained in the top four of the points table and it looked as though they would qualify for the play-offs again this year. However, the team’s fortunes took a turn for the worse when LSG captain KL Rahul was injured against RCB at Ekana Stadium on May 1.
LSG are currently placed at number 4 on the points table and have a net run rate of +0.309. With two games still left to play for the Lucknow-based team, let’s take a look at the possible scenarios for their qualification.
How can Lucknow Supergiants qualify?
Lucknow Supergiants face Mumbai Indians on 16 May and Kolkata Night Riders on 20 May. If LSG win both these matches, they will have a total of 17 points and could even move up to 2nd place on the points table.
If the Krunal Pandya-led side win just one of their two matches, they will be dependent on the results of the other teams. In such a scenario, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings will also have a chance to clinch a play-off spot. Chennai Super Kings are relatively safe in this scenario, with a run-rate of 0.381 guaranteeing them a top-two finish.

However, if LSG lose both of their games against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Night Riders, they will find it difficult to look for a playoff berth.
