In-form Ferraris looking to extract a bit extra out of last-start runners-up
Luke Ferraris continued his personal-best season with a double at Happy Valley on Wednesday, but the 21-year-old jockey certainly will not be getting ahead of himself as he looks to extract everything he can out of the final 17 meetings of the 2022-23 campaign.
Ferraris’ midweek brace took him to 25 wins this term, already five more than he managed in his debut campaign last term, and he sits firmly entrenched in the top 10 of the jockeys’ premiership ahead of his five rides at Sha Tin on Sunday.
“It’s great to improve on what I did last season. Hopefully, I can keep building on what I’ve done so far this season and keep the ball rolling,” Ferraris said.
“I tend to take it as it comes. You want to set goals, but you don’t really want to set them too big because if you miss, you get disappointed – especially in a place like this – so I just try to get the best result out of each horse.”
Among Ferraris’ book is the David Hall-trained Flying Mojito, who steps back from 2,000m to 1,400m for the Class Four Table Tennis Handicap, and Tony Millard’s last-start runner-up, Gold Tack.
Gold Tack has finished within a length of the winner in his past three starts, and Ferraris jumps aboard for the first time with regular rider Hugh Bowman sidelined by suspension.
Gold Tack is not the only of Ferraris’ rides looking to go one better, with the Francis Lui Kin-wai-trained Hameron out to convert a last-start second into a first Hong Kong win from gate 13 in the Class Three Para Sports Volunteer Handicap (1,400m).
A winner of three of his nine pre-import races in Australia, Hameron finished 11th in the 2022 Group One Metropolitan Handicap (2,400m) at Randwick while trained by Chris Waller and did not win over anything shorter than 1,550m Down Under.
“He’s been doing everything right so far. He’s got a bit of a tricky draw at the weekend, but I hope that if he gets a bit of luck in running, things can go his way,” said Ferraris, who was aboard for Hameron’s eye-catching second over Happy Valley’s 1,200m on his Hong Kong debut last month.
Ten-time Group One-winning jockey Dee to join Hong Kong riding ranks next week
“The step up in trip will definitely suit him – 1,200m is a bit short for him. Sha Tin will probably be a bit easier from that draw, but hopefully, he’ll finish off like at his debut. He switches off nicely. He’s a lovely horse to ride.”
Ferraris also partners Art Lite for Jamie Richards and Joyful Genius for Hall.
