Levi Aumua to chase All Blacks jersey
Moana Pasifika have lost standout back Levi Aumua to the Crusaders on a two-year deal.
Aumua will join his fourth Super Rugby club next season after being a key player for Moana Pasifika since their inaugural season in 2022, and having spent time with the Chiefs in 2018 and the Blues in 2019.
His form for Moana Pasifika had caught the attention of the reigning Super Rugby champions and Crusaders general manager of professional rugby, Angus Gardiner, said: “his stats are undeniable and his outputs across the park are very high.”
As an athlete who could play multiple positions, from the midfield to the outside, Gardiner said Aumua had showed what he could do – “we’re excited about helping him achieve his goals”.
“His versatility will really open up our selection options in the ’24 season,” he said.
By signing with the Crusaders Aumua was signaling his intent to chase an All Blacks jersey.
“In my career I have been lucky enough to play all over the world, but in recent times my desire to try play for the All Blacks has intensified. At the end of last year, I got a small taste with the All Blacks XV which only strengthened my hunger to play for the All Blacks,” Aumua said.
Aumua is familiar with the Crusaders after playing for Tasman Mako in the NPC, having clocked up nearly 50 appearances for the Nelson-based side over two stints, the first between 2017-2019, the second from 2021 onwards.
However, Aumua wanted to finish the season strong with Moana.
He said he had “never been in a team like this – the memories created will last a lifetime”.
“I would like to say how very thankful I am to Moana Pasifika for providing me the platform over the last few years to get on the field to play and express myself with a great group of players.
