Here is the first Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay in all of its gory glory

Body and Soul… and bits

During Summer Game Fest, NetherRealm Studios released the first gameplay footage for its upcoming fighter Mortal Kombat 1. The sequel is coming to PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms this September.

The trailer gave us our first look at both the chaotic one-on-one action, as well as an all-new chapter in the long-running MK lore, (which, this time around, is another hit on the good ol’ reset button). Additionally, we got konfirmation that the “Kameo Fighters,” previously referenced on the official website, is, as expected, an assist system. This will allow players to mix up their roster by calling in playable and NPC kombatants from past and present.

In the trailer, we se veterans such as Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Mileena, Raiden, and Kitana with assists supplied by Kameo fighters Sonya, Kano, Kenshi, and Jax, among others. Of course, we also saw some miserably gory, body-severing fatalities, along with what seems to be a return of the Mortal Kombat (2011) X-Ray mechanic, or at least some form of hard-hitting revenge system. While the game isn’t looking a whole lot different from its predecessor, this was a positive first appearance.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches September 19 on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms.
