IOC urges IOA to appoint CEO quickly, asks it to settle wrestling issue by following UWW rules and directives | More sports News – Times of India
NEW DELHI: The International Olympic Committee (IOC), during its executive board meeting on Wednesday, raised concerns over the Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) delay in appointing a CEO/secretary-general. The IOC issued a strong statement urging the IOA to expedite the appointment process and address issues affecting the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) by working closely with the sport’s world body.
“NOC of India has been directed on many occasions to finalise the appointment process of the new CEO/Secretary General without any further delay, in accordance with the NOC Constitution, so as to normalise the situation within the NOC. Unfortunately, the NOC has yet to complete this process. The IOC continues to monitor this issue,” an IOC statement read.
Additionally, the IOC called upon the IOA to coordinate with international sports federations to address ongoing issues impacting Indian sports federations, particularly the Wrestling Federation of India.
Indian wrestling has made headlines in the last two months with top grapplers, including Olympic medallists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik and Asian Games champion Vinesh Phogat leading a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi demanding the arrest of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The agitating wrestlers have alleged that Brij Bhushan has sexually harassed women grapplers.
“The NOC of India has been requested to liaise and work closely with the International Federations in order to address a number of ongoing issues affecting Indian Sports Federations, in a coordinated manner and in accordance with the rules and directives of the International Federations concerned. This includes, in particular, the situation of the Wrestling Federation in India,” said IOC.
The IOA has been reminded of the urgency to appoint a CEO since March, and the IOC confirmed that the 2023 IOC session will take place in Mumbai. According to the new constitution approved by the IOC, the IOA was required to appoint a CEO within a month of the new executive council assuming office.
As per the new constitution drafted by the Supreme Court-constituted panel and approved by the IOC, the IOA was to appoint a CEO who would perform the functions of the erstwhile secretary-general, within a month after taking charge of the new executive council led by IOA president and former sprinter PT Usha.
Despite more than seven months having passed since the new IOA council took charge, the appointment of a CEO has not been made. The IOA secretary-general, Kalyan Chaubey, has been carrying out the CEO’s functions in the interim. The CEO will be an ex-officio member of the IOA Executive Council without voting rights.
The IOA had previously set criteria for the CEO position, but only one applicant was found suitable. IOA president PT Usha stated that more applications were needed, and the IOA would re-advertise the post.
One of the eligibility criteria for the CEO role is a minimum of 10 years of experience as the CEO of a company/entity with an annual turnover of no less than Rs 25 crore. The amended IOA constitution stipulates that the CEO should be proposed by a nomination committee comprising the IOA president, chairman of the Athletes’ Commission, and one IOC member from India.
