New Dune: Part Two Trailer Offers First Look at Christopher Walken’s Emperor
A new trailer for Dune: Part Two has revealed our first look at Christopher Walken’s Emperor.
Dennis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune sequel will conclude the epic tale of Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) as he unites with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen to take the fight to the Harkonnens.
“Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee,” reads the trailer’s description.
Christopher Walken plays Shaddam IV – the Emperor and head of House Corrino.
The Emperor is responsible for granting Paul’s father, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) control of the planet Arrakis – essentially setting a trap for House Atreides as he feels threatened by the Duke and his increasing popularity.
He was originally played by José Ferrer in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Dune.
“Deal with this prophet,” says Walken’s version of Shaddam IV in the new trailer… and deal they will. Fanning the flames of war between Atreides and Harkonnen, the Emperor clearly has an endgame in sight.
“Your father was a weak man,” he tells Paul, goading him.
What follows is an all-out war between Paul and the Fremen and House Harkonnen forces as the fight for Arrakis comes to a bloody conclusion.
“I am Paul Muad’Dib Atreides,” says Paul, triumphantly. “Duke of Arrakis. Long live the fighters!”
Dune: Part Two heads to theatres on November 3, 2023.
IGN’s Dune: Part One review gave it 7/10 and said: “Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is beautiful to behold, a faithful adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel. Or of its first half, that is. And therein lies the problem that the film faces, for in cutting this story into two parts, Villeneuve has front-loaded Dune with a lot of set-up and no obvious way to end things… and so it lingers, and eventually overstays its welcome. This is a technically brilliant, visually amazing movie with a top-notch cast and deep sci-fi concepts. A shame, then, that it feels like a drag in its back half.”
