Panty and Stocking With Garterbelt Revival Gets First Teaser at Anime Expo

Anime Expo 2023 kicked off in full might on Saturday, with fans showing up to learn about the biggest upcoming anime projects. During Studio Trigger’s annual panel, attendees had a chance to not only watch the premiere episode of the studio’s latest project, but also learn about the return of two beloved properties.

Without a doubt, the most exciting reveal was a teaser for the return of the popular Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (which you can watch here), a show about two fallen angels causing chaos while trying to gain their way back to heaven. The anime was notable for its visual style, which paid homage to American cartoons, and its rather crude and irreverent humor. It was named as part of IGN’s list of best anime of the 2010s, which called it an “entertaining joy-ride with dozens of tributes to western cartoons and a bangin’ soundtrack.”

The revival was first announced at last year’s Anime Expo – over a decade after the release of the original show – but very little information was revealed then. Director Hiroyuki Imaishi is returning for what was billed New Panty and Stocking (although that’s not the final title) alongside animation director Sushio, writer Hiromi Wakabayashi, and designer Shigeto Koyama.

During the panel, studio president Masahiko Otsuka explained that the staff at Trigger has long been wanting to make a new Panty & Stocking, but they were unable to do so because the rights belonged to studio Gainax. Thankfully, that problem is no longer, as Trigger has gotten the full rights to the property back from Gainax and is free to make as many new Panty & Stocking projects as they want (Otsuka joked that they could go as far as 10 seasons and a movie, so take that Community!). As of now, there’s no word on whether this will be a film or a TV show, or when it will be released.

Additionally, Imaishi and Otsuka shared a new trailer for a theatrical re-release of the two-part Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann film for its 15th anniversary. The films will be released in North America this winter, and they’ll be released in 4D.

As for new projects, fresh off the release of the acclaimed Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, audiences at Anime Expo got the chance to see an advance premiere of the first episode of the upcoming Delicious in Dungeon. The anime is an adaptation of Ryōko Kui comedy adventure manga, directed by Yoshihiro Miyajima (SSSS. Gridman and SSSS. Dynazenon).

Delicious in Dungeon essentially follows a Dungeons & Dragons party as they venture through a dangerous dungeon — and eat everything they come across. The anime was revealed to be premiering on Netflix in January 2024.
