Novak Djokovic falls over Wimbledon net in awkward moment against Hubert Hurkacz
Novak Djokovic isn’t often the subject of mockery on Centre Court, but that changed when he fell over the net during his Wimbledon fourth-round match against Hubert Hurkacz. The Serb’s opponent couldn’t help but laugh after the bizarre incident broke up a tense second set.
Djokovic was knocking on the door to breaking Hurkacz and moving closer to a two-set lead against the Polish world number 18.
Hurkacz, 4-3 down in the second set, produced some monstrous serves to save three break points before handing Djokovic an advantage.
But he was on the receiving end of a slice of luck when the seven-time Wimbledon champion lost his balance and fell over the net when attempting to seal the game from close range.
Hurkacz couldn’t help but join the Centre Court crowd laughing at the incident but shared a showcase of good sportsmanship with Djokovic as the pair embraced at the net.
It was straight back to business, though, and Hurkacz utilised his powerful serve again to draw level at 4-4.
Djokovic saved three set points to clinch a stunning tiebreak 8-6 in the first set before edging another tiebreak by the same scoreline in the second.
Play was suspended after the second set, with 25 minutes left until the 11pm curfew, Djokovic to seal his place in the quarter-finals on Monday.
If he secures a third and final set against Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev will be waiting in the last eight after his thrilling 7-5 6-3 6-7(6) 6-7(5) 6-4 win against Alexander Bublik earlier on Sunday.
Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, No 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune are also scheduled for fourth-round action on Monday.
Djokovic could easily be in a treacherous position two sets down heading into the restart if it wasn’t for his incredible tiebreak record.
The 36-year-old has won his last 14 tiebreaks, including five at this year’s Wimbledon against Pedro Cachin, Jordan Thompson, Stan Wawrinka and Hurkacz.
He is widely expected to return to Centre Court in seven days’ time to battle for his eighth Wimbledon crown and fifth on the bounce.
