Novak Djokovic ‘spygate’ twist as new culprit named after Alcaraz’s dad accused

The Wimbledon ‘spygate’ involving Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz has taken a new twist with Spanish press now insisting the world No 1’s dad never filmed the Serbian in training. Practice courts at Wimbledon are adjacent to one another with no walls or barriers between them.

Fans line up to try and watch the biggest stars close up in practice while reporters also have access to a viewing platform. But the unique nature of the Wimbledon practice courts means that sometimes there are situations where big-name players practice alongside one another.

That was the case earlier in the tournament when both Djokovic and Alcaraz were training in close proximity and Serbian media alleged that the Spaniard’s father had filmed part of his rival’s session. Speaking after his win over Hubert Hurkacz, Djokovic called for “more privacy” at Wimbledon on the practice courts in an apparent response to the Serbian reports.

Alcaraz even accepted that his father may well have filmed the Serbian, although insisted if he had that it would have been nothing more than an innocent souvenir. When asked whether it would give him an advantage over Djokovic, Alcaraz said: “I don’t think so. I mean, I have a lot of videos from Djokovic on every platform.”

But Spanish outlet Relevo now claims that it wasn’t Alcaraz’s father who filmed Djokovic after all. It’s said that a reporter for the website had made a ‘recording for personal use’ while chatting with Alcaraz’s dad on the court.

It’s claimed the journalist took a ‘small 11-second video’ of Djokovic training, which he is said to have sent to his family.

Alcaraz and Djokovic remain on course to meet in Sunday’s final for a blockbuster contest, but both players still need to navigate tricky semi-finals. The Spaniard faces off against Daniil Medvedev and Alcaraz expects a difficult challenge.

He said: “He’s playing great here on grass. He has a great, great year as well. I lost the first match we played here on grass. So I have to learn about it.

“But going to enjoy the semifinal. I think I’m playing great, a lot of confidence right now. So it’s going to be a really good match I think. I going to enjoy.”
