Comic-Con 2023: Andy Samberg and Joe Trohman Join Forces for Holy Roller

It’s not every day that a publisher announces a new comic co-written by comedian Andy Samberg and Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman. But that’s what happened at Comic-Con, as Image Comics revealed the first details about Holy Roller.

Billed as a cross between Kingpin, Inglourious Basterds and Batman, Holy Roller is a darkly comedic superhero series about a bowling ball-wielding vigilante. He’ll have to bowl the perfect game when his hometown becomes overrun by Neo-Nazis.

The creative team on Holy Roller also includes co-writer Rick Remender (Seven to Eternity, Deadly Class) and artist Roland Boschi (The Scumbag). Cover artists include J.H. Williams III, Brett Parson, Keron Grant, Brian Level, Mike Hawthorne and Rafael Albuquerque.

“Sometimes the best stories start off as silly, over-the-top ideas that after a little while become clear to everyone in the room are actually great. This is one of those,” said Remender in a statement. “This is a hilarious and poignant story, full of big action, and told from a place of real passion.”

“If you have ever found yourself wondering, ‘Why is there no comic book about a vigilante hero who smashes people’s faces in with a bowling ball?’ you are in LUCK, bruv!” said Samberg.

Trohman added: “This is an intensely personal book that will resonate with all. A hyper-stylized yarn, but informed by the bleak reality we’ve all come to know. It’s also your one-stop-shop for a bad-ass Jewish guy kicking, punching, and bowling-balling Neo-Nazis into oblivion!”

Holy Roller #1 will be released on November 22, 2023.

Elsewhere at Comic-Con, DC and Legendary revealed a crossover comic called Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong. You can also brush up on everything announced at SDCC so far.
