Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp worried as Thiago Alcantara ‘wants out’ of Anfield
Jurgen Klopp has concerns that Liverpool are going through too much of a rebuild this summer, according to reports. That’s with the prospect that Thiago Alcantara could be his sixth veteran midfielder to leave the club.
The Reds let Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave as free agents while Jordan Henderson and Fabinho are heading to Saudi Arabia for a combined £52million. In Milner, Henderson and Fabinho, Jurgen Klopp is losing three of his most senior players and his captain and vice-captain.
The trio managed a combined 1,043 appearances at Anfield. And the oldest remaining midfielder, 32-year-old Thiago Alcantara, is now being tipped for an exit. The Daily Mirror report that the Spaniard is considering a return to his home country.
It is claimed that La Liga clubs are aware Thiago would be ready to leave Anfield. He joined three years ago from Bayern Munich for £25million and is out of contract in 12 months’ time on Merseyside. Klopp does not want to lose Thiago but very rarely denies a player an exit if they want out of the club.
Per insiders, the Liverpool manager wanted Milner and Henderson to stay due to their dressing room influence and is thought to believe the changing of the guard happening at the club is too soon. Finances have ultimately led to the decision to sell Fabinho and Henderson, who are 29 and 33 respectively.
Liverpool will now have to accelerate their plans to sign more players having already bought Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, who they spent over £100m on. Crystal Palace’s Cheick Doucoure is the latest name linked.
Palace apparently want £70m for the Malian though, just a year after buying him for £21m from Lens. Other potential targets to replace Fabinho at No 6 include Southampton’s Romeo Lavia and Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.
Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat who starred at the Qatar World Cup with Morocco is another candidate. Further forward, Ryan Gravenberch of Bayern Munich is admired as a potential Henderson successor as is Nice’s Khephren Thuram.
Klopp has promised that Liverpool will have a strong squad for the new season. He told the We Are Liverpool podcast: “My main focus and my main energy has to go into the training sessions, that’s what I do. The time left and right of the sessions then I can try and sort other stuff, and that’s what we are doing.
“Still around three to four weeks until the first game of the season, a few things have to happen until then. Definitely. Transfer market-wise as well, that’s clear now. It will happen, and we will have a good team.
“What I would like to ask for, is to trust us. We feel really responsible for what is happening here and we will do absolutely everything to have a season, in the best possible understanding, we will never forget. That’s the plan.”
