Shaka Hislop faints while presenting pre-game for Milan-Real Madrid fixture
Former Premier League goalkeeper Shaka Hislop fainted on air moments before AC Milan and Real Madrid played a pre-season fixture in Pasedena, California.
The Trinidad and Tobago star, who won 26 international caps, was working as a sideline reporter for ESPN when he appeared to start wobbling. He then fell forward onto broadcast partner Dan Thomas.
Weather reports suggest temperatures in Pasedena today reached over 80F (29C).
After Hislop fainted, broadcaster ESPN promptly cut to an ad-break. The network later updated viewers saying he was “conscious” and being assessed by medics, reports the Daily Mail.
A visibly relieved Thomas later said: “My mate, Shaka, not here, but as it stands, it’s good news.
“He’s conscious, he’s talking, I think he’s a little embarrassed about it all. He’s apologized profusely. Not a man who likes people to make a fuss of him.
“Obviously far too early to make any sort of diagnosis, but the important thing is, that Shaka’s conscious and we spoke to his family as well, because you imagine seeing that happen live.
“We spoke to his wife and things are looking OK,” Thomas said. He later joked: “Silly, Shaka.”
Since the incident, there has been an out-pouring of support for Hislop, who played for Newcastle United, West Ham, and Portsmouth in the Premier League.
One social media user said: “Sending prayers to Shaka Hislop from ESPN, who collapsed on air tonight. Scary situation. I hope it was minor.”
Another added: “Relieved to hear shaka hislop is conscious, talking and with his family.”
A third said: “Prayers for Shaka Hislop. He just passed out live on the ESPN broadcast of AC Milan vs Real Madrid.”
