Katie Boulter sends message to boyfriend Alex de Minaur after Toronto final loss
Katie Boulter shared her reaction after her boyfriend suffered defeat in the final of the Canadian Open. Alex de Minaur enjoyed a breakthrough week, defeating two top 10 players en route to his first Masters final. But he just fell short as Jannik Sinner came through 6-4 6-1 to lift the biggest title of his career.
De Minaur’s dream week in Toronto came to an end as he fell at the final hurdle on Sunday. The Australian stunned three seeded players, starting his run with a victory over world No 13 Cameron Norrie.
He then came from 1-5 down in the first set to defeat eighth seed Taylor Fritz in the round-of-16 and stunned world No 3 Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-final. But the 24-year-old was no match for Sinner in the final as the Italian needed 89 minutes to win his maiden Masters title.
Although it wasn’t to be for De Minaur this time around, he received a sweet message from his tennis star girlfriend following one of the best weeks of his career. “Back to back finals. Career high incoming,” she wrote alongside a heart and a proud-face emoji.
With the Australian now set to rise to No 12 in the world, she added: “#12 Proud.” The Canadian Open final marked De Minaur’s second in as many weeks, as he also reached the championship match in Los Cabos before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The seven-time title winner also had a message of his own for Boulter and his loved ones after losing to Sinner as he thanked those who believed in him and vowed to be back in another final. “Thank you to my team, to my family, to my friends, to everyone who kind of believes in me, day in, day out,” De Minaur said in his speech.
“I wouldn’t be here without you guys. It’s a journey, it’s step-by-step, but we will get there.” The Australian No 1 also looked back on his run, adding: “It was a breakthrough week, very nice here in Toronto.
“I played some great tennis. It gave me a taste of my maiden Masters final and I’ll tell you what, I’ll definitely be back for more.” And Boulter wasn’t the only one with a message for her boyfriend of three years, as Sinner also paid tribute to De Minaur.
The pair had coincidentally entered the men’s doubles tournament in Toronto but lost in the first round to eventual champions Jean-Julien Rojer and Marcelo Arevalo. Addressing his partner after beating him in the singles final, Sinner said: “You had two incredible weeks, making a final twice.
“And you are such a nice, nice guy. Doubles – forget about doubles this week. We still have to win one match. But it doesn’t really matter, it’s nice to share the court with you. You’re working very, very hard. Sometimes we practise together in Monaco so we know each other very very well. I hope you can jump into the top 10 very soon.”
