Jockey Club stewards charge Bentley ‘under the rules of racing’
Jockey Club stewards have charged Harry Bentley “under the rules of racing” two days after adjourning their inquiry into the rider’s “potential disciplinary matter”.
In a brief statement on Thursday evening, chief steward Marc van Gestel said that “the stewards have issued licensed jockey Mr H Bentley with a charge under the rules of racing” and that the hearing of the charge will take place on Monday next week.
The charge follows a drawn-out hearing that involved lengthy sittings on Monday and Tuesday of this week, with veteran trainer Dennis Yip Chor-hong’s presence adding an additional layer of intrigue to a process shrouded in mystery.
While Van Gestel opted not to offer any details about the charge against the British rider, he said that Jockey Club stewards had acceded to Bentley’s request for the hearing to occur next week.
Bentley’s future remains in limbo as stewards again adjourn inquiry
“The hearing of the charge has been deferred, at the request of jockey Bentley, to Monday, November 13 to allow for his legal representative to appear at the hearing,” Van Gestel continued in his statement.
Stood down from riding in all races, barrier trials and trackwork since Friday last week, Bentley will miss his third consecutive meeting when Sha Tin hosts a 10-race card on Saturday.
Bentley’s enforced absence has followed his strong start to the season, with the 31-year-old notching seven wins from 69 rides in the 2023-24 campaign.
Bentley has been a member of the Hong Kong jockeys’ roster since April 2021, when he arrived in the city as the winner of two Group One events – one in France and one in the United Kingdom – and six consecutive riders’ championships in Qatar.
