Liverpool interested in Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans to replace Gini Wijnaldum

Liverpool are reportedly interested in Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans, as they look to find a replacement for the outgoing Gini Wijnaldum. As well as scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final, Tielemans scored six goals and recorded four assists for the Foxes this season.

According to Belgian news outlet Het Nieuwsblad, Tielemans was emotional at the end of Leicester’s final game of the Premier League season.

As well as missing out on a top-four spot, this was also reportedly partly due to the realisation that he may have just played his last game for the club.

The midfielder joined Leicester in January 2019 season on loan from Monaco, before the move was made permanent for £32million seven months later.

With Brendan Rodgers’ side failing to achieve Champions League qualification for next season, there is a possibility that their best players, like Tielemans, might be considering a departure this summer.

Tielemans’ team-mate, James Maddison, has been tentatively linked with Chelsea.

He was waved goodbye by 10,000 Liverpool supporters on Sunday, having joined from Newcastle for £25million in 2016.

It has long been expected Wijnaldum would depart at the end of the campaign once his deal runs out after five years of excellent service.

Some reports have stated that the 30-year-old is set to sign a three-year contract with Barcelona.

Wijnaldum’s agent Humphry Nijman was pictured leaving the Nou Camp offices on Tuesday morning.

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich have been linked with Wijnaldum in the last 24 hours.

But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has tweeted the news that the player will be moving to Barca instead.

Romano wrote: “Gini Wijnaldum is set to join Barcelona as a free agent until June 2024 – there’s nothing agreed with FC Bayern, he wants to sign for Barca.

“Last details and… here we go soon!”
