Streets in Las Vegas are being named after famous Pokémon, including Jigglypuff and Squirtle, as developers struggle to come up with fresh titles to christen the warren of new streets springing into existence around the ever-expanding city.
“It’s really, really hard to name streets in this town,” said Harmony Homes LLC construction manager Andrea Miller in an interview with the local TV station KLAS 8 News NOW, and reported on by Polygon. According to Miller, a developer must submit two names for every street it creates in order to ensure that each one has an original name, at least within the confines of the city.
With the amount of streets being developed in burgeoning Las Vegas city, that amounts to a lot of names. Thankfully though, Miller’s kids play games, and were kind enough to point her in the direction of a plentiful wellspring of inspiration in the form of Pokémon names.
It’s also worth noting that all of the names used to date — including Squirtle and Snorlax Lane — are taken from Generation One Pokemon. This means two things: one, Miller and/or her kids are people of impeccable taste, and two, there are many hundreds of street names left in the inspiration bank.
“When I hear Jigglypuff, I giggle,” said Miller. “When you’re coming home from work and you had a bad day and you have to turn on Jigglypuff Lane, that will make you smile.”
This isn’t the first time that Pokémon names have ended up in unusual places. Back in 2021, scientists decided to name three newly discovered species of Australian beetles after the legendary bird Pokémon Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos due to their rarity.
