Aaron Rodgers reveals just how close he was to retiring before returning to Packers

In an alternate reality, Aaron Rodgers is sipping tequila right now, instead of taking snaps at practice.

Aaron Rodgers’ offseason drama culminated with an eye-opening press conference and a return to training camp with the Packers (and a new contract). But those who doubted that Rodgers was considering retirement aren’t taking the man’s word for it.

Speaking with Dan Le Batard, the Packers quarterback revealed just how close he was to walked away from the game instead of walking onto Lambeau Field for his 14th season as Packers starter:

“I felt going into the weekend before camp that I was 50/50,” Rodgers said. “I don’t care if people don’t believe that — that’s true. There were some things that got me to 50/50 for sure, and I spent a couple days in silence and meditation and contemplation, and really felt like that I should come back.

“There’s a lot of opportunities for growth and exciting things in Green Bay. That felt like the right thing to do.”

Rodgers said in his first press conference returning to the Packers that he had seriously considered retirement at various points in the offseason, but the 50/50 number puts into perspective just how close he was to stepping away.

There’s a good chance that 2021 will be the last season for Rodgers in Packers colors, if his contract is any indicator of his future: With the money allocated to Rodgers and the structure of his deal, his future in Green Bay beyond this season is in doubt at best, and nearly non-existent at worst.

It’s all a bit technical, but the most important thing for Green Bay is that he’s practicing with the team, and not out golfing or hosting “Jeopardy!” or something.
