Abha Khatua equals shot put NR to win silver at Asian Athletics Championships | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Unheralded Abha Khatua equalled the women’s shot put national record of 18.06m to win silver medal, while Jyothi Yarraji and Parul Chaudhary won their second medals in the Asian Athletics Championships on Sunday.
The 28-year-old Khatua improved by nearly a metre (93 cm) from her previous lifetime best of 17.13m, sending the 4kg iron ball to a distance of 18.06m on her fourth throw to finish second behind China’s Song Jiayuan (18.88m).
Her second-best throw of the day was 17.10 metres.
Veteran Manpreet Kaur, whose national record Khatua equalled, claimed bronze with a first-round throw of 17m.
Yarraji, who became the first Indian to win a gold medal in the 100m hurdles at the Asian Championships on Thursday, earned a silver medal in the 200m with a time of 23.13 seconds.

Parul Chaudhary, an ace Indian long-distance runner, earned her second medal of the championships with a silver in the 5000m.
Chaudhary, who won gold in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday, finished second in the 5000m final in 15:52.35 seconds, trailing Yuma Yamamoto (15:51.16) of Japan.
Chaudhary, 28, holds the national record for the 5000m with a time of 15:10.35.
Ankita won bronze in 16:03.33, giving India two medals from the event.
DP Manu took silver in the men’s javelin throw with a best throw of 81.01m, while Gulveer Singh took bronze in the 5000m event with a time of 13 minutes and 48.33 seconds.
Earlier, Kishan Kumar and KM Chanda won silver medals in the men’s and women’s 800m races, respectively, by running personal best performances.
Kumar finished second in 1:45.88 seconds, trailing Abubaker H Abdalla (1:45.53) of Qatar, while Chanda crossed the finish line in 2:01.58 seconds, trailing MK Dissanayaka (2:00.66) of Sri Lanka.
Kumar’s previous personal best was 1:46.17, and Chanda matched her previous career best of 2:01.58.
