Afobe issues desperate plea after ‘400k worth of jewellery stolen by cleaner’

Former Arsenal youngster Benik Afobe has alleged that a cleaner has stolen £400,000 worth of jewellery from his family as he made a desperate plea on Instagram for information. Afobe, who now plys his trade in the United Arab Emirates after coming through the Gunners’ academy, alleged that his mother’s house was the subject of theft on Wednesday morning.

Afobe made his money at clubs such as Wolves, Bournemouth and Stoke among others after leaving Arsenal permanently in 2015 while also making two caps for England under-21s before switching allegiances to DR Congo. Now, while playing for Hatta in the UAE, took to Instagram to post a message urging anyone with information to get in touch with him.

Afobe wrote: “This woman has stolen £400,000 worth of my family’s jewellery this morning from my mum’s house in Elstree whilst cleaning!! If anyone knows her let me know asap!”

He also posted a video with the caption: “Disgraceful woman. She can run but she can’t hide!” accompanied with an angry emoji to highlight Afobe’s fury.

The 30-year-old is yet to offer any update regarding the alleged theft, though is clearly concerned having left England for the first time in his career to join UAE second division side Hatta in January. He enjoyed a positive start to life in the region, having scored nine times in eight appearances on their way to the title as the Dubai-based side secured promotion to the top flight.

Having left Stoke following a loan to Millwall with Gary Rowett, the boss explained his decision to move to Hatta after tearing up the final year of his contract at the Championship club. “He felt for him and his family it was the right move at this point. We’ve agreed to letting him do that, based on the fact we want to strengthen in the forward line area,” he said.
