The Cupertino-based giant is also looking to develop in-house Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modems that it sources from Broadcom, which may find its way to iPhones starting as early as 2025, reports Bloomberg.
As per the report, Apple plans to replace Broadcom-made chips used for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with a chip made in-house. If the report is to be believed, the chip could debut with iPhones in 2025. The iPhones also use Broadcom-made radio-frequency chips and wireless charging components, which as per the report, might also be replaced with in-house customised parts.

Ming Chi-Kuo, the analyst, notes that Apple initially planned to test the in-house modem with the iPhone SE 4, after which it would have used the modem in the iPhone 16 lineup. The analyst says the in-house modem might arrive next year or in 2025.
Qualcomm and Apple have been wrestling over the licensing, patent, and royalty agreements related to cellular modems. While the lawsuit is now settled, and Qualcomm expects to ship the majority of 5G modems for the iPhones this year, Apple has also made it clear that it will be using in-house modems in the future.
In 2019, Apple acquired the modem division of Intel, boosting its effort for an in-house modem. The Cupertino giant will have access to engineering talent and essential patents for cellular technology. However, it will still have to licence patents from Qualcomm and Ericsson for the in-house modems.
Once it is done with the development of the in-house WiFi and Bluetooth chip, Apple plans to make a unified chip that will power the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular connectivity.
