After smartphones, Netflix may bring games to TV – Times of India

In 2021, the streaming giant Netflix introduced its gaming service – Netflix Games. And now, after two years of being on smartphones, Netflix Games could soon expand to televisions.
A snippet of code embedded in Netflix’s application that makes references to games that can be played on televisions suggests that the company may be working on introducing gaming on its television app. Not just that, but the code also indicates that smartphones could be used as controllers for these video games.
First spotted by app developer Steve Moser and reported by Bloomberg, one line in the code reads, “A game on your TV needs a controller to play. Do you want to use this phone as a game controller?” So, if Netflix brings games to its television app, then there could be an option of using smartphones as controllers. Although it does not guarantee that the games would arrive on TV, it seems like the company has been testing it internally.
As of now, Netflix Games is only available on Android and iOS smartphones and tablets too. Last year, Netflix’s Vice President of game development, Mike Verdu, revealed that the company was thoroughly investigating the possibility of providing cloud gaming services and was also planning to introduce more than just casual games tailored for TV.
There are a total of 55 games available in Netflix’s game catalogue, and it plans to add 40 more titles this year. Netflix Games has several upcoming releases, including Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace on April 18, a roguelite set in the same universe as The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot but with improved gameplay and storyline. Too Hot to Handle: Love is a Game, the sequel to the popular reality show game, will be released later this year, with Nanobit as the developer. Monument Valley and Monument Valley 2 will also be added to Netflix Games’ library in 2024.
