Akash Deep stars as Bengal thrash Haryana, storm into Ranji Trophy quarters | Cricket News – Times of India
KOLKATA: It was a matter of time and the Bengal bowlers were in no mood to delay it further as they wrapped up the Haryana tail quickly to script an innings and 50-run victory in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group ‘A’ encounter at Lahli on Friday.
This back-to-back victory fetched Bengal seven points as they stayed at the top of the points table with 32 points from six matches thereby ensuring a quarters berth with a match in hand.
They next face Odisha in the last group league match at the Eden Gardens from Tuesday.
Pacer Akash Deep, well assisted by Ishan Porel and Mukesh Kumar, remained the main architect of this win finishing with a career-best 10-wicket match haul. Both Porel and Mukesh ended with four wickets each in the match.
The match lasted just 10 overs in the morning in which Haryana lost their last three wickets with Akash claiming two and Mukesh one. Amit Rana played a lone hand before becoming the last batter to be dismissed for 20 runs.
Coach Laxmi Ratan Shukla was happy but stayed grounded. “It’s a good win but we have a long way to go. There is no place for complacency. There is no place for celebration. We need to work hard and fight together as a team,” he said looking ahead to the knockout stage.
Brief scores: Bengal 419. Haryana 163 & 206 in 79 ovs (Yuvraj Singh 78, Chaitanya Bishnoi 55; Akash Deep 5/51, Mukesh Kumar 3/62, Ishan Porel 2/42). Bengal won by an innings and 50 runs. Points: Bengal 7, Haryana 0.
