Alcaraz eyeing ‘crazy’ Wimbledon feat as he hails ‘beautiful’ Djokovic fight

Victory over De Minaur in the Queen’s Championships final will see Alcaraz reclaim the top ranking spot and therefore enter Wimbledon as the top seed. He overcame Sebastian Korba 6-3 6-4 in his semi-final on Saturday.

The exciting 20-year-old admits that entering the Wimbledon draw as the top seed would be ‘crazy’. He also hailed his fight with Djokovic for the world No 1 spot.

“Being top seed at Wimbledon, being No 1 is still a dream for me. It will be crazy to be top seed at Wimbledon.‌

“It’s something I work on, to recover the No 1. Novak and I are having a beautiful fight for No 1.

“Honestly, at the beginning of the week I didn’t know that I could recover the No 1, but it is an extra motivation for me to go into the final with extra energy.”

Alcaraz had played on grass just three times prior to this tournament. He was knocked out in the fourth round of Wimbledon last year, thus failing to live up to the hype that surrounded him a year ago.

However, he has raised expectations with a stunning year since last year’s Championships. Alcaraz first became the top-ranked player after winning his maiden Grand Slam – the US Open in September last year.

Watching videos of some of the greatest players of all-time has helped Alcaraz learn to adapt fast to playing on grass. He is now one of the favourites to win at the Championships later this year.

He added: “I’m playing great and feeling great. I’m really happy to play my first final on grass, and even more here at Queen’s.‌

“I’m getting better, I’m feeling better every match I play. I feel like I’ve been playing for 10 years on grass, I didn’t expect that.”

Before Wimbledon, though, Alcaraz must defeat De Minaur. The Australian surprisingly beat Holger Rune in his semi-final on Saturday, setting up an enticing showdown with Alcaraz.
