Alcaraz makes Paris Masters decision after receiving test results

Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed that he will play this week’s Paris Masters after suffering a last-minute injury scare with his knee. The world No 1 reportedly started suffering discomfort during his semi-final loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Basel and underwent emergency medical testing on Monday, deciding to stay in the tournament and play his first match against Yoshihito Nishioka on Wednesday.

Alcaraz’s hopes of playing the final Masters 1000 tournament of the season looked to be in doubt on Monday morning as the 19-year-old sought medical tests after feeling discomfort in his knee during his semi-final at the Swiss Indoors on Saturday. According to AS, the world No 1 was not concerned about the issue at the time but felt his knee pain persisting after arriving in Paris.

But he has now decided to compete this week after receiving his test results and will play his first match on Wednesday, giving him an extra day to recover. The top seed will face Nishioka after receiving a bye to the second round, with the world No 38 defeating Aslan Karatsev in straight sets on Monday.

Speaking on Monday evening, the US Open champion told reporters: “I had problems [to my knee]. Every player has problems at the end of the year. Not too serious.” Alcaraz has just three tournaments left for the season including this week’s Masters in Paris-Bercy, as he will make his ATP Finals debut next month before representing Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga. He has already played a total of 67 matches this year, winning 55 of them.
