Alexis Mac Allister reportedly snubbed Manchester United ahead of deciding to join Liverpool, despite the Reds’ failure to qualify for the Champions League. The World Cup winner is set to be Jurgen Klopp’s first summer signing, with Liverpool finally getting one over Premier League rivals United.
Mac Allister has been key to Brighton’s remarkable success in 2022-23. His performances for the Seagulls helped them qualify for the Europa League under Roberto De Zerbi. Despite European qualification, the South Coast outfit harboured little hope of keeping Mac Allister.
Liverpool are now set to capture Mac Allister after agreeing a fee with Brighton. The exact value of the deal is unknown, with figures ranging from £45-60million all being reported.
The Argentina star will apparently conclude talks over personal terms with Liverpool before completing a medical at the club’s training base. The Reds have secured a coup in luring Mac Allister despite their failure to finish in the top four of the Premier League.
According to The Times, Mac Allister turned down an offer from Man Utd before accepting Liverpool’s advances. It sees Liverpool get revenge over the Red Devils, with Chelsea star Mason Mount allegedly set to pick Old Trafford over Anfield in the coming weeks.
Klopp has been desperate to reinvigorate a tired midfield this summer. Long-serving stars James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita will all depart the club when their contract formally expire on June 30.
Liverpool’s midfield woes played a key role in Klopp’s inability to make a stronger challenge for the top four and compete for the major trophies during 2022-23. Injuries, fitness issues and a loss of form to several midfield players saw Liverpool’s performances dip after a fantastic season the year prior.
