Alita: Battle Angel Director and Star Are In Talks About A Potential Sequel
A sequel to Alita: Battle Angel is looking more likely than ever, with producer Jon Landau revealing he’s in talks with director Robert Rodriguez and star Rosa Salazar about a new film.
Speaking to Screen Rant, Landau tantalisingly commented “we’re working on it” regarding a potential Alita Battle Angel 2. He later expanded on who “we” was, explaining that he was “talking to Robert and talking to Rosa, and all is good”.
Alita: Battle Angel is based on a popular manga of the same name and follows the trials of a cyborg girl who awakens in a scrap pile. With no memory of her past Alita must navigate the dangers of the dystopian sci-fi world she finds herself in, while coming to terms with her true nature.
The 2019 movie appeared to suggest that Battle Angel was never meant to be a standalone piece of cinema, and its cult following has never given up on hope of a sequel. Back in 2020 one particularly zealous fan arranged for a plane to buzz that year’s Oscars ceremony, trailing the message #AlitaSequel and #AlitaArmy.
By the sound of it both Rodriguez and Salazar are open to the idea, and actor Christoph Waltz has already indicated that he would be game for returning to reprise his role as Alita’s adoptive guardian in a potential sequel.
Landau also touched on how James Cameron’s Avatar films and Alita: Battle Angel have influenced one another in terms of the realism of their respective characters.
“I think what we’ve learned from Avatar is how much more facial nuance and subtlety that we can get into characters that we want to be emotional and emote that are humanoid,” commented the director. “Alita would not have been possible, but for what we did on Avatar. Avatar: Way of Water would not be what it is but what we did for Alita. And now let’s put that back and give it back to Alita.”
In IGN’s 8/10 review of Alita: Battle Angel we described the movie as “an ambitious, impressive, visually spectacular production with great performances that make its strange world seem real”.
