All we know about Gabriel and Henderson incident as FA investigate
The Football Association continue to gather information as they investigate an incident between Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes and Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson that occurred on Sunday. The two were embroiled in a heated on-pitch row late on in the Gunners’ 3-2 win over the Reds at the Emirates.
The pair came together after Arsenal won a penalty, which was duly scored by Bukayo Saka. There was a lengthy confrontation between Gabriel and Henderson before team-mates on both sides got involved.
The Telegraph report that Gabriel immediately complained to referee Michael Oliver about something he claims to have heard. Oliver went across to both managers, Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp, to make them aware of a comment allegedly made.
Both Gabriel and Henderson were spoken to post-match by Oliver for their observations. It remains unclear exactly what was said in the bust-up with no public comment from either club.
An FA statement confirmed the governing body will look into the matter. It read: “We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool . We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident.”
While Arteta said on Wednesday he “100 per cent” backs his players’ version of events. He added: “It’s something I don’t want to touch. It’s in the FA’s hands and I’m not going to get involved in that.
“I don’t know [if the investigation will rumble on]. It’s something that I don’t decide. I think timings are really difficult to predict. The FA is in charge of the situation and we’ll have to wait and see.”
All parties are co-operating with the FA and will follow disciplinary procedures as the body mull over pursuing further action. Since Sunday, fresh footage has emerged on social media of Henderson and Gabriel sharing a feisty handshake.
The players spoke one-to-one with the Brazilian defender’s countryman Roberto Firmino stood next to them and Klopp also keeping a keen eye on the heated discussions.
