Ally McCoist trolls Sir Geoff Hurst after Kylian Mbappe’s hat trick
ITV co-commentator Ally McCoist trolled England legend Sir Geoff Hurst after he suggested that Kylian Mbappe was the first man to score a World Cup final hat trick where all three goals were over the line. Hurst infamously scored three as the Three Lions beat West Germany in 1966 to win the trophy for the first and only time however there has been much debate about the legality of his second goal, with many suspecting the ball did not cross the line.
McCoist was on commentary duties for the final, joining Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon behind the microphone for ITV. The 60-year-old was treated to an excellent occasion, with Argentina beating France on penalties after a 3-3 draw in normal time with many spectators and pundits describing it as one of the best football matches of all time.
While he ended up on the losing side, Mbappe made history by becoming the first man to score a hat-trick in the final since Hurst completely the feat in 1966. This parallel was not lost on the Scotsman who could not resist at the uncertainties that surround England’s third goal in the 4-2 success over West Germany.
While discussing Mbappe’s goals with Matterface and Dixon, McCoist remarked: “The first hat-trick in a World Cup final where all three were over the line.”

“It was an absolutely outrageous final,” he said. “Let’s be honest for a good bit of it we were disappointed about how France were going about the game.
“But after the penalty it exploded into one of the best games of football I’ve ever seen, never mind just in the World Cup. We said before ‘Is the script written for the wee man?’ He was amazing.
“Mbappe and Messi both turned up – the two players that we spoke about before the game. It’s an absolute privilege to be here.”
