Amazon: Amazon’s self-driving car completes first public testing: Details – Times of India

Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle startup Zoox Inc. has reportedly carried passengers in its completely self-driving car on public roads for the first time. According to a report by Bloomberg, the company has mentioned that the EV which doesn’t have a steering wheel has recently run a mile-long route. The fully autonomous car was carrying staff between Zoox’s two main buildings in Foster City, California. The company needs some additional clearances to expand the service to the public. Meanwhile, Zoox will operate a shuttle for employees on the trip between office buildings. The company also claimed that this ‘Robotaxi’ trip marks the first event of a fully autonomous vehicle (which doesn’t have any human controls) has carried passengers on a public road.
Zoox’s Robotaxi: More details
Zoox has held a driverless testing permit in California, US since September 2020. The permit was later extended by the state to include the self-driving Robotaxi. The company unveiled its Robotaxi at the end of 2020 and has since been conducting testing at its facility.
Before this, Zoox’s public-road testing was limited to a fleet of gas-powered cars. These vehicles carried sensors that powered the self-driving technology. This Robotaxi can carry four passengers split across two inward-facing rows of seats. The autonomous vehicle doesn’t have traditional controls or pedals. As per the report, Zoox’s Robotaxi can travel at a top speed of 35 miles per hour.

Amazon and self-driving cars
In 2020, Amazon acquired Zoox for an undisclosed sum. The tech giant has also acquired other startups including General Motors Co.’s Cruise to deploy Robotaxis. However, investigations about this technology’s safety concerns have been increasing, the report adds.
Cruise announced that it has received permission from California’s department of motor vehicles to test its Origin shuttle on public roads earlier in February. However, the company has not started testing its self-driving shuttle yet.
