Amazon Prime Video To Soon Feature Blade Runner 2099 Live-Action Sequel Series

Blade Runner will be making its return again, with a new live-action series on Amazon Prime Video.

Titled “Blade Runner 2099”, the show will be taking place 50 years after the events of Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 flick Blade Runner 2049, which was a sequel to the 1982 Ridley Scott-directed film.

The upcoming show will see Scott return as an executive producer, with Silka Luisa of Shining Girls fame acting as the showrunner.

The live-action series is based on the Blade Runner franchise created by Ridley Scott. The original film centered around former police officer Deckard played by Harrison Ford in Los Angeles set in the year 2019. The film features a dystopian future, where bioengineered humanoids known as replicants work in space colonies. Even though it underperformed tremendously at the box office, Blade Runner received several praises from critics.

Since then, Blade Runner has gained widespread acclaim as the film that popularized several genres like neo-noir and cyberpunk. Furthermore, it has also etched itself as one of the greatest science-fiction films of all time.

Even though Blade Runner created waves in the film industry, it took nearly 35 years for a sequel to finally make it to theatres again. Directed by popular filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Blade Runner 2049 starred a returning Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling playing K, a Nexus-9 replicant. Just like the original, the sequel performed terribly at the box office. But, it did receive widespread acclaim from critics and fans of the original.

Blade Runner 2099 has been in development at Amazon for quite some time, with Scott even confirming a story being written for it earlier this year, and it won’t be long before the series hits Amazon Prime Video.
