android: Microsoft starts testing Android 12.1 Subsystem for Windows 11 – Times of India

Microsoft has started testing new features and improvements for Windows 11 in Insider Preview. The update brings several new features, changes and improvements to the operating system. However, the most noticeable update is the new Windows Subsystem for Android on Windows 11.
The company has updated the Windows Subsystem for Android with Android 12.1 aka Android 12L. For those who don’t know, the Android 12L is a version of Android 12 designed for bigger screen devices like tablets, etc.
Starting today, users in Windows 11 Insider Preview Dev Channel ring running version 2204.40000.15.0 can now run the Android app on Android 12.1.
This means that Windows 11 will run the Android app on the latest version of the Android operating system. In addition to this, the update also brings improvements in terms of Android app integration with the Windows operating system.
As per the official changelog, the Android app can now show pop up message notifications in the Windows notifications section. Also, Windows taskbar can now also show whether an Android app is using microphone or location services.
The update also addresses the Android app restarting issue after waking up the system from stand by. The changelog suggests that the Android apps should no longer restart after resuming the machine from sleep. Apart from that, Microsoft has also updated the Windows Subsystem for Android Settings app. The company has also added improved network capabilities.
While all the new changes appear to be pretty big, it is currently rolling out in the Dev channel Insider Preview and it is bound to carry several bugs and issues. We will recommend installing the update only on a secondary machine.
