Android: These may be the biggest ‘security threats’ for Android smartphone users in 2023 – Times of India
What is vishing
Vishing (also known as “voice phishing”) is a social engineering attack which involves calling the target and requesting information. In order to deceive victims into disclosing personal information or taking action on the attacker’s behalf, these callers pose as representatives of banks or credit card companies and ask users to share personal details, including financial information.
Some of the remote access apps used by these criminals include AnyDesk and TeamViewer. These apps give hackers access to users’ devices.
Android threat predictions for 2023
- Rise in Android malware usage with vishing attack
- Increase in
spyloan applications through new attack vectors - More banking trojans with on-device fraud affecting online payment applications
New dangers
Recently, the security company has also noticed an increase in SMS forwarder trojans. The level of access to a user’s financial and personal information might vary depending on the banking trojans and RATs that are used. The company expects that threat actors will launch more attacks using such malware in 2023 as opposed to screen-sharing programmes.
The predictions made by Seqrite highlight emerging cybersecurity trends that are projected to disrupt the evolving business landscape. “Cybercriminals have seized the opportunity as businesses struggle with the economic and geopolitical uncertainties of 2022, which has led to a sharp rise in cyberattacks. The number of cyberattacks increased by 125% between 2021 and 2022, according to the World Economic Forum‘s Global Cybersecurity Outlook study, and the trend is anticipated to continue in 2023,” said the company in a release.
Increase in spyloan applications through new attack vectors
Spyloan applications are instant loan apps that offer small loans without much paperwork but come with high interest rates and additional fees. Collecting a large amount of personal information before loan approval is a common practice, which they use to harass the borrower during loan recovery. From sending scandalous
messages to the borrower’s contacts to blackmailing them by morphing their photos – Spyloan applications are notorious for causing significant damage to the victims.
